eBay Shopping?

11.20.2014

Do you make major purchases on eBay? I know "major" is subjective. Consider it to mean any amount that you personally would be upset to have be a total loss. I've had the unfortunate experience of having purchased a Friedman Brothers mirror on eBay that arrived much differently than was described or photographed.  A significant portion of the gold leaf was actually gold paint. Not pretty.

Last night I was looking through fabrics on eBay, and found these four, among many, many others, that are gorgeous.

After my mirror experience, which actually happened a few years back, I've been hesitant to shop on eBay for anything terribly expensive.  However, this rug below was absolutely perfect for my recent ORC project, so I held my breath and hoped for the best.  It arrived exactly as pictured and described, THANK GOODNESS.

So, now that I've put my foot in the water again successfully, I might be willing to try it again.  Ebay would be a great place to find fabric bargains.  There needs to be an app where you input specific items, and then you're alerted when they're listed. If I've just thought of it, it probably already exists.

What about you?  Are you an eBay shopper?  Have you had all good experiences?

Jennifer that is a dilemma. I had a difficult Ebay experience as well and it turns you off. Your rug is gorgeous though and I would try again I am sure. Also why does everyone else seem to find the greatest items on Craigslist...me not a thing!

In addition to beautiful fabrics, vintage rugs (yes, we share similar passions!), my biggest purchase from ebay recently (albeit ebay classifieds) was our new PUPPY! And we love her! :)

That rug is fabulous. I purchase a lot on eBay and do well. When you type in a search you can save it and have emails sent when they find it. I buy a lot of fabric-- the selection beats local options...

I have to admit I've turned to etsy but your rug purchase proves ebay can be great.

I buy on ebay all the time and for the most part I've been pretty happy with everything I've purchased. The Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper from the most recent ORC was an ebay purchase. The only complaint I had was that it smelled of mothballs. Thankfully the scent is dying away. So happy your gorgeous rug worked out. It's a stunner!!

I did have a bad ebay experience, but all the other's were positive. I would definitely buy on ebay. I love your rug, can you find me one?

Yes, there is such an ebay alert feature. After you type in your search and get your results, you click on "follow this search" and you'll get a daily email showing you the latest matching listings.

I have 4 alerts set for my account and I look forward to seeing what's new . . . .

Love eBay shopping...tons of fab goodies just like the ones that you found...just have to dig a little deep to find them! I feel like that is half the fun though. Digging through everything to find the gem. That Manuel Canovas...love. <3

We used the orange version of Manuel's Chinoiserie scene fabric for clients pillows! What a fins!

I'm a big fan of eBay. And as having been both buyer and seller, I can say paypal is overwhelmingly on the buyer's side. I've had two customers dispute totally foolish and crazy things. The items weren't returned to me and they got refunds! I buy on eBay all the time. It was a godsend when I was catering. Great way to pick up china, silver, and crystal. I actually just bought a set of blue and white bread and butter plates last week for $9! Imagine my surprise when they arrived in perfect condition and were from the 1890s! I did have one bad experience with a chandelier, but I fought it with paypal and was refunded about 60 days after the transaction.

When I look around my house, I realize that the majority of my home has come from eBay. I've saved hundreds of dollars and with over a 1000 transactions as both a buyer and seller, I've had very few that have gone bad. I know it can be frustrating when it doesn't work out but just remember more times than not it works out. :)
