On Symmetry

Image
Jessica Walmsley Interiors Do you need symmetry in a room?  I do.  It's nothing huge, just a tiny "hmmmm, something's not quite working for me here" type of reaction if it's missing.  I don't have to have perfect symmetry. Just enough balance to not be distracted.  These first five images show what is for me, a high level of symmetry.  And, on this vignette above; how perfect is that?  You know how I love blue and white with pink flowers.  I've been sharing that obsession for years. Suellen Gregory Isn't this the loveliest dining room?  It's Suellen Gregory's, and that unbelievably gorgeous lantern is from Coleen & Company .   Anne Hepfer Ashley Whittaker oomph The next five photos use accessories in a less symmetrical way. With the exception of one, they all work for me.  They're beautifully styled, and the balance works without distracting me. BHG Jonathan Adler via Lonny Robyn Karp

Blue and White Monday || Jessica Walmsley Interiors

Image
Everything today is from the portfolio of Jessica Walmsley Interiors .  This Atlanta interior designer creates rooms with a mix that I love.  Here, she's used blue and white with sisal, wood tones, black, acrylic, and that basket tray which was the perfect choice to sit atop that darling ottoman.  As an aside, I'm happy to be seeing more skirted ottomans lately.  For awhile, it seemed like every room had to have the same exact ottoman with turned legs. Skirted with contrasting welting may be my favorite. And, how perfect is this room?  I love how Jessica used the reverse in this paper for the bath.  I'd be beyond thrilled to have this copied exactly for a guest room and bath in my house.  To see more of Jessica Walmsley's work, go here .

McMillen Interior Design and Decoration

Image
I landed on the McMillen site after clicking through a pin of one of my favorite pinners , and was struck by the diversity of style in their portfolio.  This New York company has been around since the 1924.  I enjoyed looking through the images on the site as they've created many beautiful and interesting rooms.  Mostly, when I peruse an interior design portfolio, the rooms will all have a similar look.  Many designers have a "signature style" that's easily recognizable.  It was interesting to be on a site and see such variance. Images all courtesy of McMillen Interior Design and Decoration I've just shared a fraction of what you can see on the McMillen site.  Go here to see more.

Christina Baker Paintings in a Girl's Room

Image
Christina Baker is one of my very favorite artists.  Her paintings are just breathtaking.  Here are two in a girls room.  What a lucky little girl, right?!  This fortunate girl has such a fresh, colorful, beautiful bedroom. When Christina was working on this series, she painted this last painting for me.  Can you imagine my excitement?  However divine you think it looks here, it's much more lovely in person.   I think I've found the perfect spot for it and will be sharing it with you in the next few months.   Christina's website and blog are great ways to stay in the loop with her and her newest work.  She's also on Instagram , and shares amazing images there.

Blue and White Monday || A Letter to Linda's Realtor

Image
You all know that my friend Linda, from Calling it Home , is house hunting in Naples, right?  I thought I'd combine a letter to her realtor, Rick, with Blue and White Monday in case he needs any help locating options. Georgica Pond Dear Rick, as you're the realtor for my friend Linda, who is hoping to find a house in Naples very soon, I thought I'd write and give you some tips.  I'm sure you quickly observed that your client is a smart lady who knows what she wants.  I know she isn't shy about sharing her ideas, but in case you haven't seen any visual examples, I'm here to help. source? Linda likes her interiors light and bright.  Looking for houses with plenty of large windows would be a good idea.  And, they need to be as symmetrical as possible, both for the interior and exterior. Linda likes symmetry.   House Beautiful If there's a house with wallpaper, do not hesitate to show it. She'll either recognize the paper a

Porch Weather

Image
source? Dallas does not lend itself to the desire for a porch.  Not for me, anyway. Maybe in the fall, a porch would be nice, but in the summer, no thank you. With the 110 degree temps, plus the mosquitoes, I prefer staying indoors. However, today, with the wonderfully mild weather we're having, I'd love a porch in which to enjoy the day. Since I don't, I'm going to settle for looking at these instead.  I hope you're having a lovely weekend!  Traditional Home Colorado Homes New England Home Architectural Digest

Botanic Art: Old School vs. Photographic Art

Image
One of the loveliest ways to cover your walls is with botanic art. Whether you choose "old school" prints, like the one below, or something still traditional, but completely fresh like this Sarah Hollander image above, you absolutely cannot go wrong.  For me, I'm going to choose the "photographic art" every time.  I love how they're traditional, but fresh and very interesting.  I call it photographic art because it starts with a beautiful photograph. Then Sarah digitally enhances the images to fit her artistic vision.   Here are more of her amazing works. Imagine how beautifully this would work as a horizontal image if it were rotated 90 degrees right?  Many of these are easily reformatted like that to work in different ways.  It's fun for me to imagine them used in different ways. The white ranunculus is another one that would be fantastic horizontal. Sarah's breathtaking images are available here .
