Purposeful Design: Planned or Collected?

I was recently taking yet another look through the incredible July/August issue of HB. This bookcase image, above, is hands down my most favorite photo included. Stacks of amazing books, breathtaking flowers, and incredible styling -- what's not to love?

I believe we should approach our interiors purposefully, and have shared about that before here, and here.  A couple of spaces in this HB issue stood out as both absolutely gorgeous, and as perfect examples of an aspect of design we should consider before embarking on a project.  The Janet Gregg room looks more collected and organic, while the Elizabeth Pyne room appears more planned and precise.

Neither is preferable; it's just a matter of personal taste.  What's important is knowing what will make you and your family feel best in your home before starting a project.  Working toward your own specific objectives will create spaces you'll love.

 Personally, I adore both of these spaces, and think my preference falls in the middle which is another option.  Striking a balance between the collected and the planned seems to be what I've done in my house.

These two new amazing Christina Baker paintings were photographed hanging on a wall in Christina's studio before they were delivered recently to Bennet Galleries .  How I'd love to visit Christina's studio to see where all the magic takes place!  I can see that it's bright, clean, minimal, and sophisticated. As her paintings are always spectacular, it follows that her work space has to be gorgeous and inspirational.   Nightlife   Half Past Two Star Dust Not blue and white, but I love this one, don't you? I'm thinking about art studios at the moment because my daughter (an artist) and I will be moving to a new house in the next few months, and will use one of the bedrooms as an office/studio. Blue and White Monday: Curb Appeal

Gwyneth Paltrow's house via decorpad While interior design is a primary focus at TPP, I also love being charmed by a home's exterior.  Ever since I can remember, I've fixated on facades scrutinizing and analyzing them as I peer out a car window, go for a walk, or look at home magazines.  I'm noticing more and more front doors painted blue, and it's a trend I like a lot. 2014 Fall One Room Challenge || Final Week

Thank you for coming to see my completed entrance hall. I redesigned our very tired and lifeless entry for The One Room Challenge. You can catch up and see "before" shots  here .  It's been so much fun working with this space, and I'm thrilled with the results.  How exciting to get to share it with you today! Above and below is the view from the front door. These are the beyond breathtaking panels that Christina Baker painted for the entry.  I'm not sure if from the photos you can get a true understanding of the impact these panels create.  In person they're even more beautiful, and I'm wanting to spend lots of time on the settee enjoying the view. Christina was absolutely lovely to work with. Besides these to-die-for paintings I get to enjoy everyday, it was fantastic getting to know and work with her.
