Blue and White Monday

8.13.2012

Happy Monday --  I hope you had a lovely weekend!  I'm thinking of china today.  I hate to admit it, but I wish I had a do-over on dinnerware selection.  One of the everyday patterns I chose (ahem - 15 years ago) was Wedgewood White.  I still love its simplicity, but I wish I had another set of dishwasher safe dinnerware that's more decorative.  I chose three sets of more formal china.  Two of them I still love, but one of them was too safe a choice.  I wish I could go back and do it again with what I know now.  Would you still make the same choices?  I've featured some of my favorites today, and I'd love to know which of these you like best.

1)  Mottahedeh, Imperial Blue

2)  Mottahedeh, Blue Dragon

3)  Mottahedeh, Virginia Blue

4)  Herend, Chinese Bouquet Blue

5)  Mottahedeh, Blue Lace

6)  Hermes, Blues d'Ailleurs

7)  Mottahedeh, Blue Canton

8)  Royal Crown Derby, Blue Aves

9)  Royal Crown Derby, Mikado

10) Bernardaud, Prince Bleu

I voted for 8 !!! The China topic is so difficult because when you pick it, usually before getting married, you just don't know as much. I have a Bernardaud light blue and white stripes that I love but don't like to put it in the wishwasher so I don't use it as often. For everyday I have a white villeroy and bosch.....and what I end up doing is buying cute cheapies here and there to spice up the dining. I always find some cute pieces at Anthropologie. Especially for dessert. But you know whose china closet you would love...Julie's!! OMG.

I've been married almost 8 years and I would select different things also. Luckily I will inherit lots of china from my grandmother but I wish I had selected something with a bit more character also.

I love the Blue Canton but the Blue dragon is a close second.
Don't laugh too hard when I tell you that my china pattern was a black and white modern design called "Midnight" by Mikasa. What was I thinking? I did however choose some lovely Waterford crystal in a very old design that I still love 20 years later.

Okay I chose #5 and voted. But I could be happy with several of these. It is like the mahogany wood dining room ... I have changed my style several times!!

Hermes gets my vote! Happy Monday!

I chose Wedgwood Chinese Tigers - a gorgeous Chinoiserie pattern as my formal china pattern when I got married and I still adore it. If I had gone with conventional wisdom and chosen white I would have always been bored with it.

I love all of them, but 1,4, and 10 are my favorites! I voted. And yes, I would love to redo the china thing.
Beautiful post, Jennifer.
Happy Monday.

I voted for #2, but it was tough. And I completely agree with rechoosing china - I have a peach and seafoam pattern that I'm hoping is on the verge of a big comeback! Happy Monday!

I voted for #5 but I have a tendency to play it safe. My everyday is Wedgwood's Queen's Ware so you can tell I'm a little boring :)

I voted for #1 but #2 was a close second. I think it's fun to mix them up a bit especially if you keep the colors just blue and white. Those patterns are all classic. I inherited a dessert set in Blue Lace by Royal Copenhagen and love it! I don't think I'd want everything to be in just one pattern, though.

Fun post. I chose Blue Canton, which I love. It is a classic and still very beautiful. The dark blue glaze has such depth. Look forward to seeing the results of this poll :-)
Happy Blue and White Monday!

This was so difficult, as I love most of the choices. Blue and white is so classic. Would love to mix and match about 3 of these! Neat post! Didn't you love Beth's comment? She is just one smart cookie anyway you slice it!

Loved all the Mottahedeh. It is rock star quality china. Hope the mosquitoes stay far away from you & your family. Sorta' scary.

I could never say no to the big "H"...Hermes ALL the way! Love how classically bold the geometry is...I can see this transitioning to all sorts of styles throughout the years! Fabulous picks!

Would love to get your thoughts on my most recent hotel renovation when you get a chance! Hope to see you soon!

I chose the Hermes. I think it is very chic and versatile - I can see it used informally in a Moroccan themed party or at a dinner using the silver, white linen and loads of flowers.

All best,
Phyllis

Your blog looks great. I chose 4 for the poll, but I also LOVE 10! I thought 10 was more casual and 4 could stand the test of time.

I am loving 10. My grandmother gave me her china when my husband and I got married. The style is amazing considering how old it is. I adore it. In fact, this may have inspired me to write about it!

You could always purchase the dinner plates and mix them with what you have. Mixing and matching can be a lot of fun.

I wish I could choose my pattern over again, too.

Number 5 wins for me! I chose a simple off white Lenox with a gold rim....still love it after 30 years......

I voted for Blue Canton. Actually, it's my latest addiction. Just celebrated our 37th, and back in the day on the eve of the bicentennial I chose Queen Anne Armetale, Blue Calico and Autumn by Lennox. I've since inherited white and gold china and added my own Chateaubriand. Surely there is a 12 step program somewhere.

oh...and that doesn't include the blue willow chargers I bought at the grocery store! Love to mix them all up. Go ahead, splurge on a new pattern to celebrate this new phase in your life and just enjoy.

I voted for the Canton but I think the Dragon is great, too. I chose Herend Chinese Bouquet in green over 20 years ago and I still love it.
